Sound Off!

Hey Divas,

For those of you who watched the Tyra Banks show yesterday, I'd like to know what you thought about the ladies who were putting relaxers and weaves up in their children's heads. I already told you what I thought in yesterday's post. Not only did I find the actions of most of Tyra's guests to be clear examples of self-hatred, but I was crushed to see the mothers impose their foolish ideals on their innocent children. Now, not all the mothers were bad -- just the ones who were doing what THEY wanted to do with their daughter's hair, without considering that their daughters may not have been happy with what was going on. I also found it hypocritical for Tyra to sport cornrows knowing good and well she has fallen into the same mindset as a lot of the women on the show. We all know she likes to wear weaves -- and a "Hanna Montana" one at that (which she joked about after the little girl explained how much she loved her Hanna Montana wig).

Aside from the foolishness, I thought the young lady who allowed Tyra's stylist to transform her straight look into a short, curly fro, looked so cute with her natural hair! It looked a lot better than that wig she had on, that's for sure!

So ladies, what did you think of the show?

XOXO,

DPrincess28

that little girl with hair all the way down to her hips was soooo adorable..if she could only wait about 7 more years she will love her hair and have haters galore lol. its so sad that she wanted to cut it just to "look like everyone else"

first of all, tyra is a hypocrite. like you, i found that she just wore cornrowns for the purpose of the show. i feel like not enough was covered - the issue of "good hair" and natural vs. relaxed hair is so broad.i feel like they just bashed both sides and didn't promote HEALTHY HAIR. whether someone chooses to be natural or relaxed, what "good" is your hair if it isn't healthy? this issue of "good hair" isn't something that can be covered in a 1hr show. i just feel like so many blanks need to be filled in.

Yes thank you for putting that on your blog about the show yesterday. I told my friends about it and I was almost mortified at how we as a people perceive ourselves! The lady who wouldn't introduce her daughter to others come on! But I am glad Tyra made this show maybe it will open other people's eyes and maybe even her own eyes to stop hiding her hair. I do believe that it is to a degree a generational curse. I know in my family it is looked down upon to be natural b/c they consider it to be not nice looking but I completely disagree and I want to break that. That's why today after doing a big chop which I was surprized to do myself, I put a pic of myself up and I have never felt as beautiful as I do being natural it is empowering and I freakin love it lol. It's about loving yourself for who you are its more than hair and that's what this experience has shown me about being natural. But it is really sad that women feel that way about their hair. I mean look at the commercials these days, I have noticed a majority of us are rocking natural so I just hope we realize that being or becoming natural is not like you think it may be. Just learn what to do and things that we need to avoid in our hair to keep it moisturized and healthy. I think my hair has never looked better. I wish I would have been accepted as a child for having alot of thick hair and I wasn't, but I also didn't know how to take care of it we have to educate ourselves to better ourselves.

i dont think tyra was being a hypocrite at all. she wore the cornrows just to show people what her hair looks like, and also to show that shes not ashamed of her natural hair. i'm a huge tyra fan and i remember back in the day of her show americas next top model, she wore cornrows at judgeing many times (like 5 or 6). i think the exact opposite of dprincess28.... if she were a hypocrite she would have kept her weave in and sat up there and told america that she looks jacked up wihout a weave and then turned and told those women that natural hair is beautiful. but instead she sat up there pround and tall with her cornrows and told those women that kinky sisters have nothing to be ashamed of.

Wow! I totally missed the show because I work during the day. Based on the ladies comments I wished I'd see it.

Lisa, i completely understand where you're coming from, i'm a huge tyra fan as well. i just found it hypocritical that she wore her hair in cornrows for this particular show. if she really wanted to show people that she embraces her own hair, i feel like she should wear it more often, instead of hiding behind the lacefront all the time.

I second that Sarah! Don't get it twisted: I like Tyra too! If I didn't, I definitely wouldn't watch her show or ANTM. However, I just wish she would wear her hair like that more often. She has no idea what a positive impact it would be on young girls--such as the one that was on her show with the Hanna Montana wig. Shoot, even Janet Jackson has worn textured weaves. I think Tyra is a beautiful woman, but I don't find the super straight, super blond look all that flattering on her anyway, but that's just my opinion...

Ok I have never felt compelled to leave a comment in a forum about a topic until now. Myself growing up I have been completely shaped by the good hair/bad hair debate. Growing up I had two main best friends both of whom were of mixed race (black & white and black and latino). I would constantly envy them for the length they could achieve and the ease of which they could do there hair and later on as teens the attention they would get from boys. When I was younger I was never told that you are a pretty girl, until one day after getting a relaxer, I was told OMG you have such beautiful hair and that when I knew that if I ever was going to be linked to beauty I had to keep my hair relaxed and long as it could get. After watching this episode of Tyra (which you can find on YouTube-Tyra Bank Show Good Hair). I really am committed to not only transitioning but doing the BC. It brought tears to my eyes watching these little girls and their images of themselves stomped before they even have a chance to grow, love and celebrate themselves. This hair issue is so much deeper than most people think. I am just thankful that I had an epiphany moment and realized that I am beautiful even if my hair doesn't have the 'white flow' (what a joke!). Come on ladies do not allow yourself to be categorized as less of a beautiful child of God any longer.

Blessings to ALL!
