The Truth, and Nothing but The Truth!
I've been watching Brandy & Ray J's new show on VHI titled "Brandy & Ray J: A Family Business." I find the show entertaining, and am glad to see that Brandy is doing well after having been out of the spotlight for some years now. She seems to have really come into her own, and is now a beautiful young woman. As I'm sure many of you know, Brandy wears lace front wigs, and has even served as the spokeswoman for Pro1o Hair by Sensationnel. Well, as I was perusing through an issue of Sophisticate's Black Hair Styles & Care Guide, I stumbled upon an interview they did with her, in which she explains her "hair care routine."
I was a little put off by the fact that the article, which explained in detail how Brandy cared for her hair, mentioned absolutely nothing about the fact that she wears lace front wigs. I just hate how misleading many of these interviews can be to young girls who want to get the look of the models and celebrities they see in magazines. Now, if she had mentioned how she removes her wig, then washes and conditions her real hair, that would have been one thing. But instead, she explained how she cares for "her hair," all while sporting various hair pieces.
I was just wondering how you ladies feel about this? I mean, it's no secret that many celebs wear extensions, weaves and wigs to protect their real hair (and I don't blame them for doing so!), so why front? Feel free to leave your comments below.
XOXO,

I agree with you 100%. I believe they put on a front because they want us to believe that they are something that they're not because they don't accept who they really are. When a black woman embraces her hair she embraces herself. And most of hollywood embraces the persona that the celebrity has to take on rather than who the person behind the celebrity really is. Thus you get celebrities who walk around 24-7 looking like they are about to perform. It’s to make us regular folk fell inferior in comparison to them, when we really aren’t. There are countless reasons but, I believe this to be one of them.
I agree that she should have been more open to sharin the routine to care for her natural hair and included that wearing the hair pieces as part of her regimen in care for her natural hair as protection. It would show her attempts at proving she is just another regular person instead of hiding that fact that her hair isn't completly flawless as a wig would lead us to believe.
It's as if hair magazines targeted toward us tip toe around a lot of hair issues such as weave, good products and deep conditioning. That's why I only purchase those types of publications with the intent to copy the styles.
It's as if they mention lace fronts or extensions, they'll be letting the "cat out of the bag"...uh the kitty's already out, hahaha! We black women know the deal, Brandy (and Sophisticates).
Yes it is a bit annoying. Anytime they refer to someones hair as 'tresses' it's safe to assume that the person is wearing extensions of some sort.
It's on this to know that something is true and it's something else to KNOW that's it's true because somebody said or admitted to something. People like to hint at a maybe, i.e. that's her hair. With people wearing wigs that are short nowadays there's no telling what hair she's seen with is hers.
I agree with you. It may be obvious to us as grown women that certain actresses are wearing wigs, but we have to remember that it isn't always obvious to young girls who don't have our years of experience.
I remember when I was a teenager and I couldn't understand why my hair didn't do what Naomi Campbell's hair did. I thought if I found the right relaxer and got the right cut, it would work magic. I'm pretty sure that my 13-year-old twin daughters don't know who has a weave and who doesn't, especially since they didn't grow up around women who get weaves.
Girl I was reading that same article and inserting wig in my head everytime she said my hair!!! I'm glad to see that someone else felt uneasy about it.
I think it's important to understand the people that we are talking about. Now, I'm not saying that it's ok to lie or mislead about your hair care routine and leave out the fact that it's not really all your hair, but, we must remember that these are celebrities. They have publicists, "hip men", etc, should we really look to them to show us who they truely are? I honestly believe that everything we see to a certain degree is fabricated to cater to certain populations. We have to let our kids know early that these people they see on tv are not who they appear to be. Because of this the magazine left out the fact that is always wigged out.
I with you on this one. Back in the day I was one of those young people mislead by hair books, fustrated because I wanted these beautiful and flawless hairstyles seen in magazines not knowing they were wigs. Mainly the curly ones, which had me going back and forth from natural to permed, because my curls didn't look like these wigs. Let your fans know how you take care of your own hair and your wig styles. Well I'm glad I found DPrincess. Now I know it takes a little work to have nice curly hair, and no one wakes up with it.
I agree with much that has been said. The part that concerns me the most is how young black girls want to achieve that look and may or may not understand that Brandy is wearing a weave/wig/whatever.
Yes, it would have been nice if Brandy had mentioned that - but as one poster mentioned - most young black know what is Weveable or not!
I am also glad to see that Brandy is still doing her thing, and is showing the world who Brandy is aside from the performer. I used to watch her on Thea and Moesha and she has always worn weave. Over the years, I would think she would showcase her locks...It should be past her behind if she was taking good care of it over the years. I don't understand why women front about wearing weave. Some people think that ONLY women with short hair wear weave which is not true (Kardashians...who would have thought!?). It would have been real down to earth for her to talk about her real hair...not because we are desperate to know, but to relate or take note to some potentially great advice.
I think it is cool that Brandy wears wigs. Wigs actually helps grow your hair because it is a protective style. I don't think she puts on the wig just to make some else believe that is her hair. To me, she maybe wearing wigs because its easier than doing your own hair or she wants to protect her hair.
For all we know, she could be natural under that wig.
I do agree with you that she should tell them what he real hair is like .
I don't think we should judge someone just because there hair isn't natural or whatever.
All hair is beautiful.
See, HER hair may actually be long and healthy under her wigs. Kinda how Tyra's whole hair situation. I would've liked for her to say, "Oh yeah, I do the weaves and wigs, and they give MY hair a break. This is what I do to MY hair". This would also let young girls know that if you do get weaves and wigs, you STILL need to take care of your own hair.
Brandy has always been known for her hair. So a more in-depth interview would've been nice
I honestly believe that she wanted you "us" to think it was her hair... Even though deep down we know its not.. She'll let you assume what you want to assume. Why should she have to tell you its not her hair? I just went natural about 2 weeks ago... I had weaves for awhile.. and all of sudden didn't want to wear it anymore... but everyone who knows me thinks its my hair and no would I correct them. It doesn't bother me that she didn't say that its not hers, she probably wasn't comfortable with that. For the fact that she does sell wigs and what not... We can all assume it isn't her natural hair... So many woman don't wear their natural hair that she may have said it that way because we can read through the lines... I'm not sure that's just my input on the subject!
My god she wears pro ten its organic hair... If she bought it's her hair so how is she lying about her hair...
