Curly Hair Update

Hey chicas! So, here's my curly hair update for December. Not sure if I'm going to get around to doing a video update this month, but I did want to let you guys know what's been going on with my hair.

For those of you who saw my Birthday Hair, Makeup and Outfit post, you know that I straightened my hair the first week in December. After rocking the straight look for a week, I washed and deep conditioned my hair using Aphogee's 2 Minute Reconstructor. I felt that my curls were limp from the heat and I therefore needed protein to re-strengthen them.

I've been getting quite a few messages lately on heat damage and may do a video on that soon, as it is a very real issue for those of us that use heat. I still have heat damage--a part of which I feel is inevitable especially if you have fine hair and use heat often, but at least the damage I'm suffering from today is nowhere near as bad as it was in the past. Let's put it this way, the heat damage doesn't jack up my curly hairstyles, so I'm good!

Anyway, because I did a protein treatment the last few times I washed my hair, I decided to do a moisturizing deep conditioning treatment today. I started out by doing my regular detangling and EVOO pre-poo treatment last night:

As you can see from my stretched out hair, I'm close to my goal--however, I'm in desperate need of a trim and know I will lose length come January.
And after sleeping with the oil, I washed it out this morning and applied some Mixed Silk deep conditioner by Silk Elements:
I just piled my hair on top of my head and went on about my day, allowing the conditioner to process. I'll rinse it out later and apply some pure coconut oil and curl activator gel before going to bed. As far as styles go, I haven't been doing anything special. I've been wearing my curls down, pulled to the side, and piled up on my head as pictured above. I therefore haven't experimented with any protective styles this month, but plan to do so come January. I plan to post a length update in a few weeks, as I will be flat ironing and trimming my ends, so stay tuned...

I have a question that's been troubling me fa some time. I'm transitioning and trimmed all my relaxed ends in the back of my hair. I'm seeing 3b/c hair. Now I'm having a looooooot of shringage. I am currently rocking out senegalese twists fa da winter.

I'm afraid of short hair...so How do I continue to wear braids or even thinking bout full head weaves as a natural? (Im a newbie to weaves.)

How do I maintain healthy hair growth & regimen in a full head weave. I heard that as a natural you cannot have the top part of your natural hair showing since I'm not relaxed.

Planning on trimming remainder 2 inches once I take these twists out. TIA!!!! <3

@Ms_Sassy: There are a lot of naturals with partial weaves. You just have to be willing to straighten the hair that is left out in order for it to blend in with the weave if you opt for a straight look. Just know that you may run the risk of damaging the part that is left out if you find that you must apply heat often (this depends on your lifestyle, i.e. if you workout often or live in a humid area).

Weaves can actually be a great protective style for naturals as long as you don't keep it in for too long. Just be sure to do a moisturizing deep conditioning treatment and moisturize the hair prior to having it braided down. When you wash the weave, make sure that you allow your hair to fully dry at the roots so that you don't run the risk of getting mildew on the scalp. I wouldn't keep it in longer than 8 weeks.
