Um, On Second Thought...

Hey Divas,

I posted a review yesterday on the Silk 'N Curl product by Smooth 'N Shine Polishing (To see the full review, click HERE). In that video, I explained how I was going to do a review on the Miss Jessie's line of hair care products--the Curly Pudding and Baby Buttercreme to be exact. I mentioned how I like to use a product multiple times before posting a review, and I only received two 2-ounce samples of the Miss Jessie's products. Knowing how much I'll have to put in my hair in one application, I know there is no way a 2-ounce container will get me through multiple applications. Thus, I went to their website to order more samples…

Whoa, Nelly!

Okay, so I got my samples for free from a friend, and therefore had no idea how much they cost! A 2-ounce container of the Curly Pudding is $7.00, and the Baby Buttercreme is $9.00. Those prices don't include shipping and handling! It should come as no surprise to you that I didn't click the "Checkout" button after filling up my cart.

People are constantly recommending products to me, and I would love to try them, but I refuse to set myself up for a fall. Why sample a product that I know good and well I'm not going to use even if it's fabulous? I'm sorry folks, but I'm not spending that much money on one container of anything. I'm heavy handed with products as it is, and if you watch the how-to videos on the Miss Jessie's website, you'll see that they advise users to apply a generous amount of their products as well.

Once I backed out of the Miss Jessie's website, I then went to the Kinky-Curly site because everyone's been telling me how much I should try the Kinky-Curly Curling Custard. I've seen a few YouTube videos in which ladies apply the Curling Custard and later rant and rave about how great it is. At $26.00 a pop, it better be great!

I'm sorry, but I just can't bring myself to spend that much money on products that I know aren't going to last me that long. I may just end up doing a "First Impression" video on the Miss Jessie's products, because I don't have enough product for multiple applications. Besides, as I stated earlier, even if it turns out to be a fabulous product, I don't see myself spending $22.00 on an 8-ounce container, or $38.00 on a 16-ounce container.

I'm a baller on a budget folks, so I'll peruse the aisles of drugstores and look for affordable curly hair products to test out. The Silk 'N Curl styler may not have been my fav, but at least it only cost $3.25!

Until next time…watch your wallet.

XOXO,

Yeah, Miss Jessie's is pretty popular now, but not every body loves it. They were at the Atlanta Hair Show last weekend. I only bought the Curly Buttercreme because it was 50% off (with a free T-shirt, yay!). I wanted to try them out a long time ago, but they are waaay too expensive online and the shipping is like $12-14 or something crazy like that. The Buttercreme is really thick. It helps to define curls, but I could think of better, cheaper products to use on a daily basis. I'm glad I got the discount, but most likely I won't buy again. It is just ok, plus it contains petroleum, beeswax, parabens and mineral oil all in one. The ladies were super nice and gave out free consultations. Their booth was PACKED! For me, the Buttercreme is nice, but I just didn't get that, I got to have it, feeling. I heard Kinky-Curly is tough to get the application right. A lot of curlies seem to live by it. I have yet to try it, but that one shouldn't be too bad considering I could buy it locally.

I agree, if it's a product I like and will be using it in the future, I'd like to know that it didn't cost so much. Thanks for sharing.

Hey girl...I'm with you on that! Check out curls by sister smith...her products make the same claims at much lower prices. 16oz. for $11.15. A lady (teshonandfamily) has a youtube vid on it and swears by the stuff...good luck:)

I'm with you 100% on this. As much as I would love to try Miss Jessie's, I just can't pay those prices. My frugal pockets can't handle loving these products.

Hey there...if you can find the Kinky Curly Curling Custard at your Whole Foods or a natural foods marke in your area that can cut down on the S&H costs and for some reason the products are cheaper in the store than on the website. And a LITTLE GOES A LONG way so the product will last you a long time.

Hey divas, thanks for the feedback! CurlyKye: I will look out for the Kinky Curly at a natural foods store as you suggested. Thanks for the tip. Oh, and ladies, I did peep that the Curls products (www.curls.biz) are much more affordable, so I am more inclined to check those out. XOXO

hey girl! i remember in one of your vids you said you lived in Cali..well in some salons in the LA area they sell miss jessies products, on the miss jessies website you can see which salons near you carry the products. that will eliminate the shipping costs

The Miss Jessies is over-rated hence why they charge so much. They know that certain women of color will get their products like the "effect" that it gives their curls and assume that no other product can do it and continue to buy it.

Oh it's a great marketing scheme because how many products on the market in an average store do actually cater to natural curly hair for women of color ??? NOT very many at all. So Miss Jessie's knows they can charge that much and certain women of color are so scared to death their hair might shrivel up they clamour to continously purchase it. Plus word of mouth is a powerful thing..just look at You Tube.

Honestly, I think a lot of their revenue though comes from their place of business and those oh so wonderful pictures you see on their website of women with professionally done hair and STRETCHED curls. When women that want those thick pretty locks of curls see that website they go bananas! SO I think when they actually DO people's hair, set up that website with all those pics, is how they generate all that buzz.

The bottom line is the prices of their products and especially in this enconomy is outrageous but you know, I know, and they ESPECIALLY know that most women will spend an arm and a leg if they think something will make them look better particularly women of color that want that "natural curly" look rather than the natural nappy look. Frankly, I think Curls is more reasonable and they have sales often. Plus their products aren't quite as heavy. But to each his own..but like Martin said, "I ain't paying the five!" LOL!
