Hair

Coif Cocktail

Hey Divas,

You know I'm always interested in learning about products that will make our hair look even more fabulous than it already does. Well, lately I've been hearing a lot about Aveda's hair care products. I can recall seeing a lot of posts on the Long Hair Care Forum regarding Aveda hair salons and how awesome their services are. Lately I've been reading a lot about Aveda's hair care products in the hair care magazines -- particularly their Brilliant Emollient Finishing Gloss and Anti-Humectant Pomade. If you read My Favorite Housewives and Their Hair, then you know that ShereƩ swears by Aveda's Brilliant Humectant Pomade. Her exact words were:

"Aveda's Brilliant Humectant Pomade lays down my fly-aways, gives my hair sheen and puts moisture back in. I can only use a little, because oily hair is not cute!"

In "Sleeping Pretty," professional hair stylist and salon owner Keisha Bogan explains how ladies should make a "coif cocktail" in order to lock in moisture before bedtime. Her cocktail consists of Aveda's Brilliant Emollient Finishing Gloss and Anti-Humectant Pomade:

"Hair expert Bogan suggests keeping strands properly hydrated throughout the night by combining products into a 'coif cocktail.' 'Use some type of light pomade mixed with an emollient serum,' says the pro, who opts for Aveda Brilliant Emollient Finishing Gloss and Anti-Humectant Pomade. For long hair, combine a dime-size amount of each product in the palm of your hands, then distribute from root to tips. Ladies with short hair should use about half this amount. 'The combination of products will silken hair as well as seal in the style,' notes Bogan. After applying these products throughout the mane, wrap tresses with a silk scarf to further hold your style" ("Sleeping Pretty," Sophisticate's Black Hair Styles and Care Guide, September/October issue, page 40).

I visited Aveda's website and saw that a 2.5 fl oz. bottle of the Brilliant Emollient Finishing Gloss retails for $24.50, and a 2.6 oz. container of their Anti-Humectant Pomade retails for $19.00. Now, you ladies know how I feel about these prices, and for those of you who don't know, or are new to Protecting Your Crown and Glory, you should check out Um, on Second Thought… to find out.

I don't want to jump on the product bandwagon just because an item has received rave reviews in a magazine, for I think we all know by now that products that get a lot of hype may not necessarily be right for our hair…or our wallets. Thus, if any of you ladies are familiar with these or any of Aveda's products, or the quality of their salon services, I'd love to get your take on them.

Until next time…

XOXO,

DPrincess28

I have used them in the past (oh, 10years ago or so) and it was just okay (the humectant). The products are pricey so I am cautious if I would ever try them again. Let me know if you try them.

I've been hearing alot about these products as well. I haven't tried any. I wonder what the other ladies have to say about them...

I have tried the Aveda Be Curly. It worked well in my hair. Curls were defined and had movement. Aveda Be Curly did not dry out my hair. The product is a bit pricey.

I currently use the following Aveda products: Brilliant Emollient Finishing Gloss, Brilliant Heat Protectant, Hang Straight (straightening lotion for curly hair). I love these products. About 10 years ago, I used to go to a hair salon in Beverly Hills and my stylist used the Emollient Finishing Gloss on my hair. I liked this product so much that after he moved away I set out on a search to find it. Well, I did and decided to try the above products as well.

Yes, they are pricey. However, since I don't straighten my hair that often I don't have to buy these products very often. Also, I've found that Aveda products stretch so using a little will go a long way on your hair. I've only bought these products once this year and I have a lot left.

I've never thought to use the Finishing Gloss as a sealer at night. I only used it after I straightened my hair, put a dime sized amount (for long hair) in palm and work through hair. I love the smell and the glossy yet non-greasy look it gives your hair... that's my two cents. :)
