First Roller Set on Natural Hair

On Saturday, June 27, I attempted my first roller set on natural hair. I used the new roller set I introduced in my post titled, Product Haul: My New Set of Rollers. I must say that for my first time, I didn't do so bad. This is something I will definitely do again in order to reduce the amount of direct heat I use on my hair. I don't straighten my hair nearly as often as I used to, but now I have an alternative to flat ironing. Check it out:

Here's some pics of my hair up close:

As you can see, the right side curled up a lot better than the left, but the left side is suffering from heat damage more than the right side. Also, my roots didn't get all that straight, but I wasn't trippin' because I knew I was going to sweat my hair out dancing that night anyway, LOL!

Although my roller set only lasted for that night, my hair wasn't totally wrecked, as I was able to rock a bun out in subsequent days. In fact, here's what my hair looked like four days later:

I realize that the key to getting a good roller set is to create enough tension with the rollers so that the kinks can be smoothed out and a more uniform look can be achieved. Had I not sweated out my hair, I probably would have tried pinning up my curls and wrapping it in my satin scarf to preserve it until the morning. A bonnet would have probably been best, but I guess I'll just have to wait for the next go 'round to give it a shot.

Until next time...

Thanks for posting the roller setting video! I too have just as many blunders if not more when I roller set my hair. :*) However, rolling takes me more than 30 minutes because I'm trying to get the right amount of tension. Also, I section my hair in a Mohawk and roll which is a little easier. I still think your hair was really cute. BTW...your bangs have really grown since Valentine's Day. Till next time...

You did a good job :) Have you thought about using lotta body to set it?

I also noticed that it's better to use the clips on my hair and I'm very curl...a lot more curlier than you. And when I use the clips it makes it more secure and the roots turn out straight.

Thanks for the feedback ladies :-). Christina, to answer your questions, I've never thought of using Lottabody 'cause I never thought of roller setting my natural hair, LOL!

I thought you did a good job! Seems like you have been rollersetring on a regular basis. I never thought to part my hair in four sections to rollerset, I will definitely try that next time. Please do another video when you rollerset again, so that we can see what you do differently. Great job!

It turned out great for the night. I've stopped rollersetting my hair (i'm transitioning) just because it takes so long and didn't really get my roots to blend as well as the bantu knot-outs I'm rocking now.
When I do rollerset, I use Lottabody too - mix mine with water and some leave in conditioner which makes it less 'crunchy'.

Purpleola, I hear you on that! I'm not feeling the time it takes to do it. And Bluebonnet, I'll let you know how it turns out if/when I do it again :-).

Have you ever thought of trying flexi-rod rollers? Maybe different types of rollers will help you achieve a straighter look in your hair.
